Job Description
Elgin Energy is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our engineering team. This individual will be responsible for the technical assessment of our designs, leading optimisation efforts, and aiding in the expansion of our PV and storage portfolio.
As a Senior Electrical Engineer at Elgin Energy, you'll collaborate closely with local Project Engineers and Project Managers in the project delivery phase. You'll also support the Construction, Pre-Construction, and Development teams by providing crucial engineering information. Your responsibilities will encompass setting the minimum functional specifications for all projects and regularly updating these standards. It's essential to keep senior management updated on engineering decisions and to encourage continuous advancements in our design and engineering methods. You'll also be tasked with evaluating new technologies and designs, positioning yourself as a go-to expert in electrical engineering. Additionally, drafting technical documentation to facilitate procurement for various projects will be part of your remit.
Possessing hands-on electrical design and field experience, you should be adept at designing and managing PV and BESS electrical systems, including the MV/HV connections. An understanding of the essential electrical equipment for PV and BESS plants is vital. You should also have a strong appreciation for the constructability of different designs. Your collaborations will span both internal teams and external parties, such as utilities, manufacturers, vendors, and EPC/EBOP contractors.
What you will do:
  • Assist Project Engineers and the Construction and Development departments with electrical engineering issues.

  • Provide electrical design inputs in conceptual design studies, feasibility studies and technical due diligence assessments for PV and BESS projects.
  • Prepare Employer’s Requirements (ERs) related to electrical works for solar PV and BESS projects, to be used for tendering purposes.
  • Ensure and monitor the implementation of Employers Requirements (Minimum Function Specifications) through constant auditing.
  • Promote standardization in PV and BESS electrical designs in order to reduce CAPEX and OPEX. Progressively establish sound engineering standards, systems and procedures for Elgin Energy's electrical engineering.
  • Prepare clear and concise documentation, including detailed design specifications, white papers, wiring schematics, diagrams, and reports.
  • Collaborate with regional vendors and manufacturers to specify electrical equipment in conjunction with the Procurement Department.
  • Evaluate electrical calculations and design of PV plants including HV/MV substation design, Primary Plant Electrical Layouts, Control & Protection Design, Electrical Power System Studies, Earthing Design and LV Distribution and General Service Design through supporting the design review process.
  • Carry out (or review) TDD and risk assessment on grid connection conditions/agreements. Support of the Grid team in reviewing DSO/TSO (ESB/Eirgrid in case of Ireland) specifications and contractor (or internal) design for maximum cost benefit.
  • Participate in project meetings when requested.
  • Engage with external consultants, contractors, independent engineers, lenders engineers, government agencies, utilities, and grid companies as needed
  • Provide technical assistance during project development and ensure the electrical engineering is properly considered.
  • Review the electrical designs submitted by EBOP/ICP or EPCs against employer’s requirements.
  • Provide expertise, guidance and mentoring to junior electrical engineers. Co-ordinate the activities of junior and graduate electrical engineers to ensure the production of high-quality electrical designs in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate with Owner’s Engineer site engineers for any electrical site issues related to design.

Your profile
  • A minimum BEng qualification in electrical engineering.
  • Minimum 5 years work experience in the design and construction stages of renewable power generators.
  • Technical understanding of grid connections for generators.
  • Proficient in electrical design software packages (AUTOCAD, PowerFactory etc.)

  • In-depth familiarity with PV and BESS industries components including modules, inverters, transformers, mounting structures, cabling etc.
  • Experience in PV and BESS plant design optimization targeting the lowest LCOE.
  • Proficiency in translating engineering issues into CAPEX and OPEX assumptions.
  • Experience in developing/reviewing electrical schematics
  • Knowledge of international electrical standards related to PV and BESS.
  • Experience of grid connection procedures and grid code compliance.
  • Familiarity with ESB/Eirgrid Design Requirements is an advantage.
  • Commissioning experience is an advantage but not essential.
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and ability to make decisions in a fast-paced emerging market.
  • Team-oriented with a positive attitude, determination, and flexibility, able to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
About us

Elgin Energy is a full-service, utility scale, solar+storage platform bringing projects from origination through to energisation. Elgin is active across the project lifecycle from project origination through to construction management and operational asset management. The company has over 12GW of solar and storage projects across our three key markets of the UK, Australia, and Ireland.

As of 2022, Elgin Energy agreed to sell the UK’s largest solar PV transaction to date consisting of a portfolio of 12 projects with a combined capacity of 519MW of projects including 70MW of collocated energy storage capacity to Scottish Power Renewables (UK) Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of global utility Iberdrola Group.

In 2021, Elgin Energy secured financing with Berenberg Green Energy Fund for the development of solar PV projects totalling 1.36GW in the UK and Ireland and also raised £25 million via Focus Capital Partners to fund its growth strategy across its core markets. In 2020, the company partnered, in separate transactions, with both Foresight Group and Metka-EGN in relation to two portfolios to deliver a total of 276MW of UK solar development projects and was successful with two Irish solar projects in Ireland’s first solar auction, RESS-1 – Renewable Energy Support Scheme (RESS). In addition to the above, Elgin Energy delivered 21 solar projects, totalling 230MW, before the UK Government’s Renewables Obligation (ROCs) scheme ended in 2017.

Elgin Energy works with long-term strategic partners to deliver projects to the energization and provides asset management services through their operational life. The company has expanded internationally over the last 14 years with a professional team of engineers, accountants, and lawyers located in its London, Dublin, and Sydney offices. Elgin has a 98% success rate through planning across all its markets.
