Job Description
The Role:
Elgin Energy is seeking a Civil/Structural Engineer to join our engineering team. This individual will be responsible for the technical assessment of our designs, optimisation efforts, and aiding in the expansion of our PV and storage portfolio.
As a Civil/Structural Engineer at Elgin Energy, you'll collaborate closely with local Project Engineers and Project Managers in the construction phase. You'll also support the Pre-Construction and Development teams by providing crucial engineering information. Your responsibilities will encompass setting the minimum functional specifications for all projects and regularly updating these standards. You'll also be tasked with coordinating with internal and external stakeholders in evaluating submitted designs and site investigation reports. You will assist in developing best practices for the civil and structural engineering process of utility-scale PV plants. Additionally, drafting technical tender documentation to facilitate procurement for various projects will be part of your remit.
Possessing hands-on Civil/Structural design and field experience, you should have experience in greenfield development and construction of PV and BESS plants. An understanding of the essential equipment for PV and BESS plants is vital. You should also have a strong appreciation for the constructability of different designs. Your collaborations will span both internal teams and external parties, such as utilities, manufacturers, vendors, and EPC/EBOP/ICP contractors.

What you will do:
  • Assist Project Engineers and the Construction and Development departments with Civil, Structural, and Geotechnical engineering issues.
  • Provide design inputs in conceptual design studies, feasibility studies, and technical due diligence assessments for PV and BESS projects.
  • Support through all stages of project civil and structural design, including conceptual and advanced system design, observing regulatory codes, customer requirements, site visits, permitting, and technical support during the construction phase.
  • Prepare Employer’s Requirements (ERs) related to Civil, Structural, and Geotechnical works for PV and BESS projects, to be used for tendering purposes.
  • Promote standardisation in PV and BESS Civil/Structural designs to reduce CAPEX. Progressively establish sound engineering standards, systems, and procedures for Elgin Energy's engineering.
  • Collaborate with regional vendors and manufacturers to specify Structural equipment in conjunction with the Procurement Department.
  • Evaluate Civil/Structural calculations and design of PV plants, including substation design, module structural solution, tracker implementation, foundation designs, drainage design, fencing and internal road design, grading works, etc., through supporting the design review process.
  • Set the specifications and review and comment on the results of site investigation studies, including topographic, hydrology, geotechnical, and pull-out tests.
  • Participate in project meetings when requested.
  • Engage with external consultants, contractors, independent engineers, lenders engineers, government agencies, utilities, and grid companies as needed.
  • Provide technical assistance during project development and ensure Civil, Structural, and Geotechnical engineering is properly considered.
  • Review the designs and documentation submitted by EBOP/ICP or EPCs against employer’s requirements.

Your profile
  • A minimum BEng qualification in Civil, Geotechnical, or Structural Engineering.
  • At least 3 years’ experience, with at least 2 years spent on engineering design or design reviews during construction in the PV industry.
  • Experience in AutoCAD Civil3D.
  • Knowledge of using international codes such as EUROCODE, ACI, IBC, ASCE, AISC, BS.
  • In-depth familiarity with PV and BESS industries components, including modules, inverters, transformers, mounting structures, trackers, etc.
  • Experience in PV and BESS plant design optimization targeting the lowest LCOE.
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and ability to make decisions in a fast-paced emerging market.
  • Team-oriented with a positive attitude, determination, and flexibility, able to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
About us

Elgin Energy is a full-service, utility scale, solar+storage platform bringing projects from origination through to energisation. Elgin is active across the project lifecycle from project origination through to construction management and operational asset management. The company has over 12GW of solar and storage projects across our three key markets of the UK, Australia, and Ireland.

As of 2022, Elgin Energy agreed to sell the UK’s largest solar PV transaction to date consisting of a portfolio of 12 projects with a combined capacity of 519MW of projects including 70MW of collocated energy storage capacity to Scottish Power Renewables (UK) Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of global utility Iberdrola Group.

In 2021, Elgin Energy secured financing with Berenberg Green Energy Fund for the development of solar PV projects totalling 1.36GW in the UK and Ireland and also raised £25 million via Focus Capital Partners to fund its growth strategy across its core markets. In 2020, the company partnered, in separate transactions, with both Foresight Group and Metka-EGN in relation to two portfolios to deliver a total of 276MW of UK solar development projects and was successful with two Irish solar projects in Ireland’s first solar auction, RESS-1 – Renewable Energy Support Scheme (RESS). In addition to the above, Elgin Energy delivered 21 solar projects, totalling 230MW, before the UK Government’s Renewables Obligation (ROCs) scheme ended in 2017.

Elgin Energy works with long-term strategic partners to deliver projects to the energization and provides asset management services through their operational life. The company has expanded internationally over the last 14 years with a professional team of engineers, accountants, and lawyers located in its London, Dublin, and Sydney offices. Elgin has a 98% success rate through planning across all its markets.
